Díaz-Canel Checks the Comprehensive Water Supply Program in Havana

7 октября 2026 в 17:45

"I believe progress has been made, and results are already being seen," affirmed this Tuesday afternoon the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, while visiting the "El Gato" Main Tank in the capital municipality of Cotorro.

His presence at that important hydraulic hub that supplies other vital tanks in the capital is part of the permanent oversight that the country's leadership carries out on the Comprehensive Water Supply Assurance Program in Havana—an effort that has the entire island in its sights.

Precisely for this reason, the president also expressed that, as progress is made as a result of what has been done in the capital, it will be necessary to expand with the accumulated experience toward other provinces, in all scenarios where reversing the deficit of the precious liquid is required.

As a sign that the effort is leaving improvement in the indicators, this Tuesday it was reported that during the course of the last week, 14,500 Havana residents left the group of population affected by the water deficit.

The afternoon session included the presence of Vice Prime Minister Inés María Chapman Waugh; Energy and Mines Minister Vicente de la O Levy; the president of the National Institute of Water Resources, Antonio Rodríguez Rodríguez; the first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party in Havana, Liván Izquierdo Alonso; as well as the capital's governor, Yanet Hernández Pérez, among other officials and experts.

Once the head of state's visit concluded, the general director of Aguas de La Habana, Yosvani Rubí Bazail, shared with the press team of the Presidency of the Republic of Cuba some ideas concerning the "El Gato" Main Tank and the Comprehensive Water Supply Assurance Program in Havana.

"We are at the main hub of the East system, whose main source is El Gato," said the expert, who also referred to "a group of actions" taking place there "to ensure water supply for the east of the city."

Maintenance has been carried out on the infrastructure of the site, Yosvani reported, detailing that from the Tank the water supply is commanded to five municipalities located in the east of the capital. From the point located in Cotorro, the official said, water is conducted to four other important tanks for the supply system in Havana.

At the "El Gato" Main Tank, Yosvani announced, the maintenance of the distribution hubs to the large pipelines remains pending: "We already executed important maintenance at this site and fixed a large leak." The expert said that "other minor works" remain pending.

Regarding the Comprehensive Water Supply Assurance Program in Havana, the official expressed that "in correspondence with the electrical improvement, water supply is also improving." And he commented that, since the Comprehensive Program began, 296,000 people have ceased to suffer affectations: "That is, we took off with an affectation peak that was about 577,000 people, and today we are at about 282,000."

"That is the trend we are having," explained Yosvani Rubí Bazail, who did not overlook that the affectation is present in all municipalities of the capital. There are those, he stressed, who know of the existence of this Program but still suffer the water deficit. It is a process of gradual improvement, which is experiencing advances but is not yet concluded, underscored the general director of Aguas de La Habana.
