
The British Academy Film Awards – or BAFTAs – unveiled Tuesday (Jan. 27) the nominees for its various categories, and Brazil won three nominations. The film
The Secret Agent and the documentary
Apocalypse in the Tropics are in the running. The awards ceremony will be held on February 22.


The Secret Agent, a film by Kleber Mendonça Filho, was nominated in the categories of Best Film Not in the English Language and Best Original Screenplay. Apocalypse in the Tropics, by Petra Costa and Alessandra Orofino, was nominated for Best Documentary. Brazilian Adolpho Veloso was also nominated in the Best Cinematography category for the film Train Dreams.

The Secret Agent competes with

Sentimental Value (Norway),
Sirāt (Spain), and
The Voice of Hind Rajab (Tunisia). Under Original Screenplay, the competitors are

Sinners.
In the Documentary category, Apocalypse in the Tropics competes with 2000 Meters To Andriivka, Mr Nobody Against Putin, Cover-Up, and The Perfect Neighbor.
The Secret Agent became one of the main contenders for the world’s biggest film award after its excellent performance at the Golden Globes in January, when it won Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actor in a Drama for Wagner Moura.
